Évora
Monsaraz Castle
Évora is a city to visit slowly. Our trip starts early and two hours later we are on the outskirts of Évora to make a very special visit to a set of monuments from the Megalithic era that will take us back thousands of years. It follows the city of Évora, where we will spend the rest of the day delighting ourselves with this true open-air museum. The points of interest are immense, but from this visit we highlight the PRAÇA DO GIRALDO, the AQUEDUCT OF AGUA DA PRATA, THE ROMAN TEMPLE OF ÉVORA… and much more
Implanted on a hill, between the elevation levels of 275 and 325m, it occupies a prominent position in the surrounding landscape, providing wide views over the plain to the west and over the Guadiana valley and the Spanish streak to the east.
Considered one of the oldest villages in Portugal, Monsaraz registers signs of settlement since prehistoric times, initially being a fortified fort.

The Castelo de Mourão was built at the highest point of the village, during the reign of D. Afonso IV, in the beginning of 1343. The composition of its structure was made with masonry of shale, marble and granite.
The parish church of Nossa Senhora das Candeias is curiously incorporated into the castle wall. Its rectangular plan has some towers.
